This manga is very episodic. It involves many different characters, some of whom you'll only see once and never see again. Some of the stories make no sense whatsoever. The idiot prince is one of my favorite characters of all time, however. 🙂 I'm not a masochist, I just enjoy watching the actions of sadists. ha ha ha

This has great significance to the author's career. As others have mentioned, THIS is the beginning of the great works that this author produces later on. And so reading this actually makes me feel nostalgic 🙂

But, objectively speaking, this manga not only did not capture my interests completely, it was confusing with bad storytelling

Level E is quite an odd manga: It has an odd episodic story structure, introducing entire new casts of characters from time to time, then sticking with them for a few chapters before switching abruptly; there doesn't seem to be a common theme except "aliens"; the character designs look way too realistic to empathize with them; and at least one part (the ESP baseball story) made no sense whatsoever.
However, a few of the stories are excellent - in particular, some of the early chapters and chapters 14, 15, and 16 come to mind. The Color Rangers storyline was neat, too.
Sadly, the manga ends rather abruptly.

But the most important thing about this manga, in my opinion, is that it hints at Togashi's future works and shows some of the same features that made them so popular. These, and the few excellent stories, made me really glad I read this manga.

The following contains slight spoilers to Level E, YuYu Hakusho and Hunter X Hunter.

Some parallels of Togashi's later works that appear in Level E:

In some senses, baka-ouji is similar to Hisoka (e.g. part of his character design (trickster; looks) and the gay subtext which is most apparent in Level E in the scene when baka-ouji plays the female princess in the RPG storyline).

Various character designs remind me of later manga:

Tsutsui is a delinquent and looks slightly similar to YuYu Hakusho's Yuusuke.

I think several of the character designs of the five Color Ranger kids appear in similar forms later on. For example, the most normal-looking one has some similarity to HxH's Gon, and the rich kid looks similar to the popular ice demon character in YuYu Hakusho.

There's even a point in the story when a character mentions Nen, but this doesn't get explained in detail.

The whole game-world-in-reality plot during the RPG storyline obviously appears in a big way again in HxH during Game Island.

There's an obvious parallel between aliens (Level E), demons/youkai (YuYu Hakusho) and extraordinary animals (HxH). Also, Level E already features some of the moral choices and ambiguities that play such a large part in the popularity of all of Togashi's works.

Personally I think this series is way too underrated. The plot is somewhat hard to understand but the comedy is way too funny (if you pay your attention to them)

I personally like the chapter in which the foreign queen marry the human and then steal their DNA to evolve into new species. The chapter leave a question: How we could protect our precious DNA from alien species.

As a major biotechnology student, I'm pretty much understand the meaning behind those words :)

A must-read manga if you are into mysterious and biological fields.

I came across this manga by chance several years ago back when my taste in manga was a lot more typical. I wasn't into the realistic art, and didn't read it. Although my taste changes greatly since then, I remained uninterested until the news of the anime adaptation came across. Wonder what the heck would intrigue a studio to green-light such an old short manga (which wasn't even popular back then), I decided to try it at last... AND WHAT A READ IT WAS! I end up reading it all in one sitting!

Enough with the rambling. Let's get straight to the story.

Level E is actually more of an anthology. Every story is loosely related based on one character, the (idiot) alien prince, who walks a fine line between heartlessly irritating and darn funny (to the readers at least). To call this series a comedy would be somewhat misleading though because some of the chapters can get fairly serious. Still, that isn't a bad thing though. This mangaka can seriously write, and one of the serious chapters feature one of the best stories I have read in a long while. The funny chapters also feature very original humor unlike what I have seen anywhere else.

The minor downside though is that the characters aren't quite developed due to the anthology format, and even the idiot prince who is featured in almost every story remains rather one-dimensional. However, all of the characters are written extremely well, and while I don't get to know them that well, I do feel for them as a character (even the prince. Then again... I have to it that I have a soft spot for his type of characters.)

The art isn't consistent, however, and it is quite easy to notice. The last chapter in particular features the sketchier-less-polished kind that most fans should be used to from the later work of the mangaka, and even a section in the middle of the stories feature art and character designs that make me think of HxH (which looks quite weird when they are next to characters with more realistic design.) I don't know whether this is an intentional experiment in style by the mangaka or not. I do prefer the more detailed and realistic style though because I think it suits the satire nature of this series better. It also proves that the mangaka can really draw when he feels like it.

Overall, this is a surprisingly amazing read despite some inconsistency, and I would encourage anyone (who love good stories) to try it. Just don't expect it to be entirely comedy though. 10/10 mainly for the originality.

its a funny series but i'm just never in the mood for it. the plots are funny and the prince sure knows how to entertain him self. if your interested in a funny series check this out

I have no idea why I ed this, and I had no idea what I was getting into when I started reading it tonight, but it's pretty damn awesome~

It's listed as "comedy, sci-fi, shounen" but there's really a lot here to make you think between the laughs. Ouji has got to have one of the most twisted brains in manga, and that's saying quite a bit, but it's a very entertaining read. 😀

I don't understand why so few people have read this. I honestly think it's a LOT better than YYH and by no means worse than HxH. Probably the best comedy manga I've ever read.
