This comment and rating are based on my impressions of the first 4 short-stories only. 3g6l1u
I agree with what MightyMaeve noted in her comment. Watashi no Kakurega e Douzo is, for the most part, a series of one-shots that depict touching (and occasionally comedic) friendships between different pairs of men; not romantic relationships. Granted, the characters are so devoted to each other that one can...
I found this manga to be unexpectedly interesting. A clever blend of horror, supernatural and psychological themes made for a most fascinating reading experience. There are only a few, short, stories, but they're all witty and atypical.
The art style is unique and rather interesting, but can be confusing until your eyes become accustomed to it.
Recommend for anyone on the lookout for something non...
Volume one is a set of thematically linked oneshots whose subject matter can be summed up as "human-nonhuman relationships of varying nature." The first story: lovers; second: friends; third: siblings; fourth: creator-creation. The fifth seems to have been stuck there as a kind of afterthought, as it was extremely short and had barely any plot.
I question the wisdom of making Star Lover the first...
I don't really think the inter-episode connections are "unnecessary"-- they're the major selling point of what would otherwise have been a pretty standard collection of short stories. That being said, the individual oneshots are all comical, clever and fairly unique; it's difficult to guess how any of them will turn out.
The characters are also full of quirky goodness, which makes the situations...
A lovely set of stories about the students and teachers of a particular school, and the various little life hurdles that they come across and deal with in their own unique ways. Hana Bolo is one of those rare works that manage to be reflective about life, childhood and growing up and drop little bites of "food for thought" without being depressing and/or full of obscure symbolism; a perfect...
...but the stories aren't really as predictable as VampireBanana claims. They were short and dark, especially the 2nd one, and I enjoyed how they didn't end with the "banish the horrible monster and live happily ever after as if nothing actually happened in the first place" theme that most of the present-day 'horror' stories seem to follow.
The art was nice and clean; while looking like something...
Nihon no Kyoudai is easily one of the most unusual manga I've come across. Matsumoto Taiyo's stories do, more often than not, possess a definite sense of direction; and I've always been impressed by the messages he attempts to convey though his characters and their tales.
But this collection of short stories entirely digresses from that feature; and took me completely by surprise.
Most of the...
...you probably shouldn't read this. For one, only the first and fourth stories have any shounen-ai at all; for another, there's no actual romance or HEA's involved. If Souichi had been a woman, Jikan Akima Jinbutsu would have been much more suited to the seinen fanbase than the BL one: so if you're looking for insane shenanigans and unusual story concepts, this collection's a good choice.
The...
If you're into quirky, creative, humorous and seemingly random plotlines with little bits of philosophy and social commentary thrown in in a completely non-egregious fashion, look no further than Hikidashi ni Terrarium.
Mediocre ratings for a lovely set of stories...predictably. I suppose for the average manga reader who expects everything to be about action, romance/sex and drama, the more down-to-earth (despite the supernatural genre!) relationships and events portrayed in Shirube no Michi might indeed seem boring.
However, if you're like me and have enjoyed any of Konno Kita's other works, this is readily...
I expect nothing less from Konno Kita, who writes some of the most peaceful and lovely short stories I've ever had the pleasure of reading. If you're the type who expects melodramatic romance and a run-of-the-mill love triangle the moment you see that the demographic is josei, I don't recommend Cotton at all. There are subtle themes of romance (not GL) in most of the stories, but it's done in a...
I guess you'd like this if you're the average male or a particularly unsympathetic female, what with the pretty little underage waifs who show up naked all over the place. (Manga Erotics F doesn't have a demographic, so please don't say: "It's seinen, what did you expect?") In my case, there was way too much lolicon and fast romance/sex involving said lolis for me to be able to appreciate the...
I've found this to be the case for many of the stories Bikke has written, with the exception of Shinkuu Yuusetsu. The art is nice and the characters are likeable enough, but the plots are so... mediocre. Which wouldn't typically merit a comment, but when even I can come up with several ways events could have transpired to make things more interesting whilst keeping the setting and the characters...
The stories fluctuate pretty wildly in of quality, so I'll do a mini-review of each one.
Kaine - Intriguing plot, interesting characters, engaging relationships (despite their twisted nature), and a unique concept that ties them all together. Definitely the best of the lot, and strong in of both plot and characterisation, especially considering its length. 9.2/10
Magical Mystery Tour -...
There were some interesting concepts and good characters here, but at the end of the day, Memai fails to deliver satisfactorily on either . I feel that Tanaka Suzuki's the kind of author who simply can't write oneshots, because all but the fourth chapter in this collection felt more like the prologues or epilogues of much longer stories.
Memai -- The premise wasn't bad per se, but the two...
Shounen Zanzou : Not really as touching or as profound as the comments would have you believe, but original enough to set itself apart from other BL, even so many years after it was written. crazyboutcute complained about how "illogical" the characters are, which is pretty puzzling: as is obvious from their backstories, both Lawrence and Adrian are emotionally unstable and Adrian suffers from a...
